Dr. Mary Ann Woodruff has been a primary care pediatrician in Tacoma at Pediatrics Northwest for over 20 years. In addition to her work in the office, she engages with the community in multiple ways. She serves on the Pierce County Library Foundation board and the Children’s Museum of Tacoma board. She is also a state leader with the Reach Out and Read national literacy program that promotes doctors giving patients books.
“My role in Washington state is to introduce Reach Out and Read to other physicians so that they can embark on this, too,†Woodruff said. “We’ve done this in our practice since 2001 and we will distribute nearly 10,000 books into little hands this year during check-ups.†About 90 medical practices statewide participate in the program, and Woodruff hopes more will join the effort. Dr. Woodruff went to the University of Washington School of Medicine. She did her residency training at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco and Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto.
With the free time she has left, Dr. Woodruff enjoys time with her family: her husband of 30-plus years; their twin adult daughters; and their son. She loves to bake and to stay active by running, walking her dogs, and kayaking. Of course, she especially loves to read.
