The Times Are Changing—Pediatricians Must Lead the Way
Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
And you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’
Bob Dylan wrote those lyrics in the 1960s, speaking to a time of upheaval. Today, they feel just as relevant. The tides are rising—misinformation, political turmoil, and societal change threaten to pull us under. As pediatricians, we cannot afford to stand still. We must swim with direction—championing science, countering disinformation, and supporting families in raising resilient children.
Pediatricians as Champions of Science & Trust
Our profession is built on science, yet the currents of misinformation are wearing away at conventions that were once foundational. Trust in expertise is eroding, and disinformation spreads faster than ever—especially when it comes to vaccines. While we may not sway those entrenched in disinformation, we can reach the many parents caught in the undertow of uncertainty.
Pediatricians remain among the most trusted voices in our communities. But trust is not static—it must be earned and re-earned through consistency, transparency, and genuine relationships. We must go beyond presenting facts; we must listen, empathize, and acknowledge the fears and doubts parents bring to us. When we approach these conversations with respect and curiosity, we open the door for trust to grow.
In a world where disinformation thrives on fear and division, pediatricians have the power to build trust through connection—one patient, one family, one truthful conversation at a time.
Beyond Science: Strengthening Families
But our role is more than just clinical—we help shape the relational health of the families we serve. When public discourse turns divisive, how does that impact the way parents communicate with their children? When families feel overwhelmed, who do they turn to for dependable guidance?
Pediatricians are in that inner circle of influence. Every time we respond to a parent with warmth and curiosity, we model respect, empathy, and hope—values they can pass on to their children. Just as science is a tool for health, strong relationships are a tool for resilience.
A Call to Action
The waters are rising. But if we stay afloat—if we speak with a united voice and a focused message —if we promote science, build and rebuild trust, and support families with purpose—we can move forward together, ensuring that children not only stay healthy but thrive.
Let’s keep swimming.
